- Socialization – without this dogs can become anti-social and can lead to dog reactivity, anxiety and aggression toward other dogs. Not every dog likes to play with other dogs but that doesn’t mean early and consistent socialization is bad as they can learn to tolerate and enjoy other dogs.
- Learning Social Cues- At least the basics are helpful to ALL dogs. Doggy Daycare provides an environment in which dogs will experience learning about social cues that they might not otherwise be exposed to. Exposure is everything!
- Exercise- Obesity is one of the worst forms of abuse and a growing problem in our country. Dogs need exercise but very few people can do enough of it. The problem is usually a lack of time to do so, day care offers that for many.
- You get a break- Having your pup(s) distracted all day playing is beneficial for many reasons. Dogs need social, physical and natural stimulation.
Puppies- Socialization is critical for young puppies, without positive exposure to other dogs in an off leash environment they can develop anxiety, fear or aggression.
Adolescent Dogs- Teenage dogs can be about as fun as teenage kids. Without constructive time they can get destructive. If chewing or destructive behavior is happening at home, its time for daycare!
High Energy Breeds- Labs, Pits, German Shepherds, Hounds, Aussies, Border Collies, Dalmatians, Jack Russells and other hyper dogs that need to run, thrive in daycare.
Working Dogs – Without the stimulation, most can present behavioral issues.
Tips for Daycare
- Drop your dog and leave ASAP- Just like kids dropping off at daycare make it short and sweet. Do Not Drag it out.
- Give your dog time to adjust- a little time to adjust is usually what most dogs need when starting to go to daycare, it is normal.
- Don’t sweat the small stuff – sometimes (although proper supervision and sanitary routines help prevent this) they can come home with kennel cough or a scratch, its normal.
- Figure out what your dog’s needs are. Determine if 1-2 days per week would really take the edge off or maybe they need to come every other day? Some have come 6 days per week at times to get them in shape and fully stimulated.
